Israel is marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack committed on August 9, 2001, at the Sbarro pizza restaurant in Jerusalem. As a result of the attack carried out by Hamas, 16 civilians were killed, including seven children and a pregnant woman, and around 130 people were injured.
In a statement on the anniversary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel stated that the attack nearly wiped out a family. The ministry noted that despite 25 years having passed, the organizers and perpetrators of the attack continue to promote terror and support attacks against Israeli citizens.
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee also issued a statement on the anniversary of the tragedy. He named the U.S. citizens killed during the attack: 31-year-old Judith Greenbaum, who was five months pregnant; 15-year-old Malka Roth, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen; and Chana Nachenberg.
31-year-old Chana Nachenberg died in 2023 after remaining in a coma for nearly 22 years as a result of injuries sustained during the attack.
Malka Roth’s father, Arnold Roth, stated that they did not receive sufficient support from the U.S. government in their efforts to bring those responsible for his daughter’s death to justice.
Ahlam Tamimi, known as one of the organizers of the attack, currently resides in Jordan. The U.S. brought charges against her in 2013, and Tamimi was included on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) wanted list. Despite this, Jordan has refused her extradition to the U.S.
