Israel must retain the ability to launch a new strike against Iran independently, even if the United States declines to participate in such an operation, stated reserve Major General Uzi Dayan, who previously served as Deputy Chief of General Staff of the IDF and head of the National Security Council.
According to Dayan, Israel and the US do not fully align on the Iranian issue. Washington is primarily interested in reaching an agreement with Tehran, whereas for Israel, the main priority remains eliminating the strategic threat.
The former senior military official emphasized that cooperation with the US remains extremely important in defense and foreign policy. However, on the Iran issue, the interests of the allies could diverge to the extent that Israel would have to act independently.
Dayan criticized the approach of US President Donald Trump, noting that Washington underestimates the global consequences of Tehran potentially acquiring nuclear weapons. He stressed that a nuclear Iran poses a danger not only to Israel and the Middle East.
Furthermore, the general highlighted the resilience of the Iranian regime, pointing out that the country’s authorities continue to maintain control over the situation, and he sees no preconditions for an imminent coup. Against this backdrop, concluding a new agreement between the US and Iran, in his view, does not serve Israel’s strategic interests, as Tehran could use the negotiation process to advance its military programs.
