Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz visited the security zone in southern Lebanon, which is under the control of the Israeli army. This marks the first high-level visit to the region since the signing of the framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon, mediated by the United States.
Speaking during the visit, Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces would remain in the aforementioned area until the threat to Israel is completely eliminated.
“We will stay here as long as the threat against us exists. Our directive to our soldiers is clear: if any threat is identified, immediate action must be taken.”
Benjamin Netanyahu also noted that only 8 percent of the approximately 150,000 rockets and shells once amassed in southern Lebanon remain at Hezbollah's disposal. According to him, more than 9,000 members of the organization have been neutralized as a result of ongoing operations.
In his speech, the Prime Minister also touched upon Israeli-Lebanese relations, stating that both countries are interested in restoring stability and security in the region based on mutual recognition.
“Lebanon recognizes Israel, and Israel recognizes Lebanon. We are sending a message to both Iran and Hezbollah: leave this area. There are two sovereign states here that want to build peace, and restore security and prosperity to both the residents of Israel's northern regions and the people of Lebanon.”
It should be noted that the framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon was signed with US mediation and is considered an important step towards reducing tensions between the parties.
