Dutch opposition Party for Freedom leader Geert Wilders visited the family of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier Benayahu Mellet, who was killed in a terror attack in Samaria last week. During the meeting on Sunday, Wilders expressed his support to the relatives of the fallen soldier.
IDF soldier Benayahu Mellet and Major Yuval Ezra were shot and killed by a Palestinian terrorist during an attack near Havat Gilad on Friday. Six other people were injured in the incident.
Context of the visit and political activity
The Dutch leader’s visit, which took place at the invitation of Yossi Dagan, coincided with the Dutch government’s announcement of a ban on the import of Jewish goods produced in Judea and Samaria a few days earlier. During his visit to the Sa-Nur community, Wilders addressed the Jewish people, saying:
This is your land, this is your history, this is your religion, this is everything it should be.
In turn, Yossi Dagan called Wilders a brave leader and highly appreciated his work for the future of Europe, the Netherlands, and Israel.
It should be noted that the Party for Freedom, led by Wilders, holds 19 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives of the Netherlands after seven MPs left the faction in January. The politician stated that he has made more than 40 visits to Israel so far and worked as a volunteer for a year in Moshav Tomer in the Jordan Valley after graduating from high school.
