President Ilham Aliyev has signed an obituary regarding the death of Aleksandr Sharovsky.
According to Jnews.az, the obituary reads:
"The cultural community of Azerbaijan has suffered a heavy loss. Aleksandr Yakovlevich Sharovsky, a prominent representative of Azerbaijani theatrical art, chief director of the Samad Vurgun Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theatre, individual pensioner of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and People's Artist, passed away on September 9, 2026, in the 79th year of his life.
Aleksandr Sharovsky was born on February 10, 1948, in the city of Baku. After finishing secondary school, he studied at the Faculty of English Language and Literature at the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages between 1968 and 1973.
Having begun his career while still a student at the Azerbaijan State Theatre of Young Spectators, Aleksandr Sharovsky devoted his life to theatre art. Over a period of half a century starting in 1976, he worked as an actor, assistant director, and stage director at the Samad Vurgun Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theatre, and served as its chief director from 1993.
Aleksandr Sharovsky made great contributions to the achievements of Azerbaijani stage art as a master who skillfully utilized both the theatre's classical traditions and modern developmental trends. He portrayed characters distinguished by their naturalness on stage. As a director, through his rich creative pursuits, numerous productions he staged based on valuable works of Azerbaijani and world dramatic heritage were distinguished by their vivid theatrical solutions and received warmly in theatre circles. These productions were also successfully performed at reputable theatres outside our country, contributing to the promotion of Azerbaijani culture.
Aleksandr Sharovsky was also known for his broad public activity. As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Baku International Multiculturalism Centre and leader of the Baku Religious Community of European Jews, he spared no effort in bringing Azerbaijani realities to the attention of the global public and preserving multicultural values in our country.
Aleksandr Sharovsky's services to the development of Azerbaijani culture were fittingly recognized by the state. He was awarded the honorary titles of 'Honored Artist' (1987) and 'People's Artist' (1998), as well as high awards of the Republic of Azerbaijan: the 'Shohrat' Order (2008), the 'Sharaf' Order (2018), and the 'Honorary Diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan' (2023).
The bright memory of Aleksandr Yakovlevich Sharovsky—a prominent artist, public figure, and sincere human being—will live forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
