Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the Iranian leadership might decide on a direct attack against Israel to distract attention amid the dire situation inside the country.
Jnews.az reports that Katz spoke about this during his speech at a special event of the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
According to the minister, representatives of the regime in Tehran feel a serious threat regarding the difficult economic situation and a possible popular uprising. He stated that growing economic pressure on Iran and fear of the regime’s overthrow could prompt the country’s leadership to take «desperate steps.»
“Some signs we see indicate that the heavy economic pressure Iran is facing, as well as the fear of uprising and the collapse of the regime, could drive them to desperate steps,” Katz said.
The Israeli Defense Minister warned Tehran to refrain from such a step. He stated that in the event of an Iranian attack on Israel, they will not limit themselves with any restrictions when launching retaliatory strikes.
According to Katz, if such a scenario occurs, Israel will paralyze Iran’s military and civilian infrastructure, including its energy sector. The minister characterized this as «returning Iran deeply into the Stone Age and darkness.»
Katz also noted that the Iranian leadership is aware of the potential consequences. Recalling Israel’s previous operations, he claimed that those strikes damaged Iran’s nuclear program and weakened its strategic capabilities. The minister also recalled the operation in which Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed.
However, Katz believes that amid growing internal pressure, Tehran’s calculations could change at any time. According to him, the increasing threats to the regime’s existence will force the Iranian leadership to take harsher steps despite all the risks.
