The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that two US service members were killed in Jordan on July 17, 2026. The military personnel were involved in repelling strikes from Iranian ballistic missiles and drones. One other service member is currently listed as missing.
According to the agency's statement, the attack caused a building to collapse, with the missing soldier believed to be trapped under the rubble. Search and rescue operations at the site are ongoing. Additionally, four US service members were hospitalized in Jordan and have since been discharged, while some personnel with minor injuries have already returned to duty.
Retaliatory measures and escalation
In response to the attack, the United States launched a series of strikes against Iranian facilities. Earlier, a statement threatening the US was published on the X social network on behalf of Mojtaba Khamenei. Following the incident, the American expert community has raised questions regarding security measures and the reasons why the base personnel were not timely evacuated or protected in shelters.
The identities of the deceased military personnel will be officially released 24 hours after the agency notifies their families.
