Knesset members have approved in a final reading an amendment to the Standards Law, which is intended to simplify the import of products into Israel. According to the new rules, goods that meet American standards will be automatically cleared for sale on the Israeli market without the need for additional inspections.
The innovation, known as the "What's Good for the US is Good for Israel" reform, almost entirely replicates a similar "What's Good for the EU is Good for Israel" reform, which was adopted a year earlier.
However, there is a key difference between the two agreements. In the case of the European import route, the place of production of the goods does not matter — the main condition is compliance with EU standards. The new rules regarding American standards will apply exclusively to goods produced directly in the United States. Because of this limitation, the impact of the current reform on the domestic Israeli market will be less significant.
