In brief
In 1908 Baku staged Leyli and Majnun, the first work to fuse mugham with European operatic form. The musical comedy Arshin Mal Alan followed and travelled the world.
Hajibeyli built the conservatoire, the state choir and a school of notated mugham analysis. The music of Azerbaijan's anthem is his as well.
