In brief

Muslim Magomayev was born in Baku and won his first great fame in the 1960s. His repertoire ran from operatic arias to pop songs, and he was equally convincing in both.

He was the grandson of the composer Muslim Magomayev, who wrote the opera Shah Ismail. Baku has a street and a monument in his name.
