In brief

On 28 May 1918 Azerbaijan's independence was proclaimed in Tiflis. The republic lasted only 23 months, yet in that time a parliament, a university and a national army were created, and women won the vote.

Since 2021 the date has officially been called Independence Day; before that it was Republic Day.
