In brief
On 18 October 1991 the Supreme Soviet adopted the constitutional act on the state independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan, asserting continuity with the republic of 1918.
A national referendum that December confirmed the act. Since 2021 the day has been called the Day of Restoration of Independence.
