Allahverdi Teymur oglu Bagirov was born on 22 April 1946 in Agdam. Seven daughters had been born in the family before him, so his parents named their only son “Allahverdi” — “given by God.”

In 1965 he graduated from secondary school No. 1 in Agdam. His younger brother, Eldar Bagirov (1951–1991), was also a footballer — a defender for the team — and later a military commander; the brothers' fates stayed intertwined to the end.

He played as a forward, wearing number 5, for the Agdam team (then called “Mehsul,” later “Karabakh”). In 1970 he captained the side in a cup match.

From 1966 to 1983 he coached at the Agdam Children and Youth Sports School, and in 1976 he was appointed head coach of “Karabakh.” In 1991 — with the war already under way — he took the field in a veterans' match against “Neftchi” and scored a goal.

Former player Mushfig Guseyev recalled: “He taught us more about honesty than football.”
