An anthrax infection has been laboratory-confirmed in the Samukh district of Azerbaijan. This was reported in a joint statement by the Ministry of Health, the Food Safety Agency of Azerbaijan (AQTA), and TƏBİB.
During the initial epidemiological investigation, it was established that individuals suspected of contracting the disease had contact with cattle.
9 people isolated in hospital
According to the report, nine people who were in contact with sick animals have been isolated in the infectious disease department of the Abbas Sahhat United Hospital in Ganja. Most of them were reported to be residents of the Samukh district.
Samples were taken for laboratory analysis from individuals observed with skin lesions and sent to the Shamkir Regional Center for Control of Especially Dangerous Infections.
The diagnosis of anthrax was confirmed based on laboratory test results of samples taken from the first patient.
Specialists are currently identifying all individuals who were in contact with infected animals and placing them under medical supervision.
How is anthrax transmitted to humans?
According to the relevant agencies, the causative agent of anthrax originates in the soil and the disease is found in various regions of the world.
This zoonotic disease is transmitted to humans primarily through contact with sick or dead animals, as well as their infected tissues and products.
The agencies stated that human-to-human transmission of the infection occurs very rarely. Consuming heat-treated meat and other products from sick animals does not cause infection.
The situation is currently under full control of the relevant authorities, and necessary epidemiological measures are being conducted in the Samukh district. No spread of the disease among the population has been recorded.
Citizens are advised to avoid contact with sick or dead animals, as well as products of animal origin of suspicious origin, and to seek timely medical attention if alarming symptoms appear.
