The case of Israeli citizens Mali and Liel Yahalomi, who went missing in Vienna, has been transferred to the control of the Israeli Police’s National Economic Crimes Unit.
The transfer of the case to a specialized unit and the remaining gag order on the publication of information related to the investigation indicate that the inquiry has moved in a new direction.
Legal and crime analyst Josh Breiner stated that involving a specialized unit dealing with economic crimes in the search for missing persons is an unusual step. According to him, this could indicate that a possible financial crime is being investigated as part of the inquiry.
According to information obtained from police sources, the fact that one of the missing women worked in the banking sector also directed investigators’ attention to this angle. Currently, possible financial violations related to her activities are being investigated.
Law enforcement agencies also considered the possibility that the women were kidnapped by a hostile party. However, according to information obtained by J. Breiner, police currently consider this scenario unlikely.
According to one of the main versions of the investigation, the women disappeared voluntarily, and their disappearance may be related to possible financial violations being investigated in Israel.
However, J. Breiner emphasized that the investigation is not yet complete and there are no final conclusions. The family of Mali and Liel Yahalomi has still not received official updated information regarding the fate of their missing relatives.
It should be noted that the family’s last contact with 50-year-old Mali Yahalomi and her 23-year-old daughter Liel Yahalomi was on Friday, August 7, 2026. They were in Vienna, the capital of Austria, at the time. It was later reported that the women’s phones were registered in the area of the railway station in Vienna.
According to reports, the mother and daughter traveled to Vienna from Prague. Their return flight was scheduled from Prague to Israel, but they did not board the flight on August 11.
Currently, the search is ongoing in cooperation between Israeli and Austrian law enforcement agencies.
