Spanish authorities have detained three people suspected of being involved in a series of wildfires. According to Spanish media reports, law enforcement agencies are continuing to investigate all wildfire incidents across different regions of the country.
Two of the suspects were detained in a forest area near the municipality of Almorox in Toledo Province. Investigators found that they had been carrying out welding work and using an angle grinder on the day of the incident. At the time, such activities were strictly prohibited due to the extremely high wildfire risk.
The third suspect was detained in connection with a large wildfire in the Anoia region of Barcelona Province. The High Court of Catalonia ordered the pre-trial detention of the 58-year-old man without the possibility of release on bail. He is accused of causing the wildfire that resulted in extensive damage.
According to investigators, the fire in Anoia broke out on July 6 during the country’s second summer heatwave. The blaze destroyed more than 450 hectares of forests and agricultural land, while also damaging homes and businesses.
Due to the rapid spread of the fire, Civil Protection authorities imposed a lockdown until the following morning. As a result, around 33,000 residents in several municipalities were forced to remain in their homes.
