Firefighters on the Greek island of Crete have been battling wildfires for a second consecutive day. The severe fires are considered part of a broader wave of wildfires affecting several countries across Europe.
On Wednesday, strong winds significantly complicated firefighting efforts on Crete and in mainland Greece. Three Greek firefighters were killed while battling the flames, and two others sustained minor injuries.
The situation in Greece has worsened following several days of devastating wildfires in Spain and France. Emergency response teams across a number of European countries are continuing their efforts to prevent the fires from spreading to residential areas and forests.
