Today is the birthday of First Vice-President of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and Chairwoman of the Digital Development Council, Mehriban Aliyeva.
Jnews.az reports that Mehriban Arif gizi Aliyeva was born on August 26, 1964, in the city of Baku. Today she turns 62 years old.
Mehriban Aliyeva graduated from secondary school No. 23 in Baku with a gold medal in 1981 and entered the Preventive Medicine Faculty of the Azerbaijan State Medical Institute named after Nariman Narimanov. In 1988, she graduated with honors from the First Moscow State Medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov. Later, she continued her education and professional activity in the field of eye diseases in Moscow.
Founding the Azerbaijan Culture Foundation in 1995, Mehriban Aliyeva established the «Azerbaijan — Heritage» magazine in 1996, published in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian languages to promote Azerbaijani culture. In October 2002, she was elected president of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation.
Mehriban Aliyeva has headed the Heydar Aliyev Foundation since 2004. Within the framework of the Foundation’s activities, various projects in the fields of education, culture, art, healthcare, and humanitarian areas have been implemented in Azerbaijan and beyond its borders.
In August 2004, she was awarded the title of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for her services in the preservation and development of Azerbaijani oral folk literature and national musical heritage. In November 2022, Mehriban Aliyeva addressed the Director-General of UNESCO requesting the termination of her activities in this position. In November 2006, she was awarded the title of ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador for her activities in the field of humanitarian and intercultural dialogue.
She has been a member of the Political Council of the New Azerbaijan Party since 2004, deputy chairwoman since 2013, and first deputy chairwoman of the party since 2021. Mehriban Aliyeva was elected a deputy of the Milli Majlis in 2005, 2010, and 2015.
By the order of the President of Azerbaijan dated February 21, 2017, Mehriban Aliyeva was appointed First Vice-President of Azerbaijan.
Mehriban Aliyeva has been awarded high orders and awards of Azerbaijan and a number of foreign states for her activities in public, humanitarian, cultural, and sports fields. She is also an honorary professor at the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov of the Russian Federation and an honorary doctor of Veliko Tarnovo University named after Saints Cyril and Methodius in Bulgaria.
