In the Jerusalem district, Israeli Border Police officers detained a 36-year-old suspect who was attempting to dig an underground tunnel to illegally enter the country. The incident occurred near the security barrier in the Qalandiya area.

As police spokesperson Dean Elsdunne reported, Border Police officers were dispatched to the scene after observers at the Atarot command center noticed several individuals digging near the security barrier.

As police officers approached the scene, the suspects attempted to flee. During the chase, police officers fired warning shots into the air.

As a result of the operation, a 36-year-old resident of Qalandiya was detained, who had no relevant documents or permits to enter Israel. Digging tools and buckets were also found at the scene.

“The suspect was brought to the excavation area and stated during initial questioning that the objective was to dig a tunnel to enter Israeli territory,” Dean Elsdunne noted.

The detainee and confiscated evidence were handed over to the investigative and intelligence department of the Jerusalem Envelope Border Police.

Investigative actions are ongoing. Additional arrests are expected to be carried out to establish all the details of the incident and identify other possible participants.
