A significant rise in temperatures has been recorded in Israel. The Meteorological Service has issued an official weather alert due to an extreme heatwave that has enveloped the entire country, including Judea and Samaria.

Temperature records and high-risk zones

Abnormally high temperatures are being recorded for a second consecutive day. Yesterday, the peak temperature reached 45.2 degrees Celsius in the settlement of Gilgal, located in the Jordan Valley. Thermometers recorded 43.6 degrees in Sodom and Capernaum. By the following morning, the air temperature in Sodom had already reached 35.5 degrees, with forecasts expecting it to rise to 40 degrees and above in the afternoon.

The most severe hazard warnings are in place for the Jordan Valley, eastern areas from Eilat to Metula, as well as parts of Galilee and the Golan Heights. Across the rest of the country, temperatures mostly remain below 35 degrees.

Forecasts and recommendations

According to meteorologists, the heatwave in Israel coincides with record high temperatures in Europe and East Asia. Scientists link the increasing frequency of such extreme weather events to global climate change. The heat is expected to begin subsiding on Tuesday. Temperatures across the country will gradually return to typical seasonal levels.

To better tolerate extreme temperatures without air conditioning, experts recommend:

  • Keep windows closed during the day and postpone airing rooms until the evening; use bed linen made from natural, breathable fabrics such as linen or cotton; take moderately warm showers, which stimulate thermoregulation better than ice-cold water; shift athletic activities to early morning hours; place a container of ice in front of fan blades for additional cooling.
