The US Air Force has announced the schedule for the start of flight tests for its prospective sixth-generation fighter. Air Force officials reported that the first flight of the new combat aircraft, designated F-47, is scheduled for 2028. Boeing is currently assembling several test aircraft.

General Dale White, who is responsible for the US Air Force’s portfolio of critical weapon systems, stated at a conference in Dayton, Ohio, that interaction between the Air Force and industrial contractors has reached an unprecedented level. According to him, the program has transitioned to the engineering development and production preparation phase. Development is on schedule, and the new aircraft is expected to make its first flight before January 2029.

Will replace the F-22 Raptor

Boeing signed the contract to develop the F-47 in March 2025. The new fighter will become a central element of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program and will eventually replace operational F-22 Raptor aircraft. The US Air Force plans to acquire at least 185 such aircraft.

Most of the aircraft’s technical specifications remain classified. However, its combat radius is known to exceed 1,000 nautical miles, with a maximum speed of over Mach 2.

Will operate alongside combat drones

The F-47 is expected to operate alongside semi-autonomous combat drones. These platforms will be capable of conducting reconnaissance, carrying weapons, and executing combat missions in the most high-risk areas.

The US Air Force also reported in July on successful tests of the YFQ-44A drone. It was reported that during the test, the aircraft successfully launched an AIM-120 air-to-air missile at a digital target.

Funding is being increased

Approximately $3.45 billion was allocated for F-47 development in the US budget for fiscal year 2026. In the budget request for fiscal year 2027, this amount is planned to be increased to $5.04 billion.

In addition, a further $1.43 billion is proposed to be allocated for the development of the CCA combat drone program.
