The migration crisis in Spain’s North African autonomous city of Ceuta has reached a critical point. The situation in the region spiraled out of control after tens of thousands of migrants crossed the border from Morocco.
According to reports, clashes between security forces and migrants who entered the city left at least 19 people dead and dozens injured. It is reported that a portion of the nearly 50,000 migrants who entered the city set fire to vehicles, looted shops, and caused riots in the streets.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that the government will use all state resources to ensure security and public order in Ceuta. He emphasized that Madrid’s support for Ceuta remains unwavering.
A state of emergency has currently been declared in the city. Security forces have urged residents not to leave their homes unless strictly necessary. Additional police and military forces have reinforced the protection of strategic facilities.
The events in Ceuta have raised serious concern across Europe. The Spanish government and European Union bodies are discussing urgent measures to stem the flow of migration and restore stability to the city.
